PLANS to make the Bullring host to the Middlewich town market fell at the first fence last week - amidst fears over the venue's ability to cater for the market's more elderly visitors.

Despite plans from Middlewich Vision to move the town's Tuesday market from its home on Somerfield car park to the central Bullring development for a trial period to August 8, Town Centre Manager Dave Thompson admitted that the first week would be the last.

He said: 'Basically, this was the first trial and it proved - not that we can't run the market on the Bullring, but that there are some issues that would have to be addressed before trying this again.'

Stallholders had been happy to take part in the trial - but expressed concerns over safety, which Mr Thompson confirmed had been proven correct.

He said: 'They were worried about the older market-goers as they feared that the steps might be too much. One lady did trip on the upper tier near the memorial and unfortunately, the Town and Country Markets company have decided to move back to Somerfield car park. To be honest, the Bullring isn't ideal for large markets, as at the Farmers' Market we have only six to seven stalls and we're pushed for space even then. I can't see the market coming back to the Bullring at present.'
