HUNDREDS of commuters faced a long crawl to work on Monday morning following a crash at a notorious accident blackspot on the A556 at Davenham.

The accident, involving a Volkswagen van travelling on the Manchester-bound carriageway, led to both lanes being closed from Sandiway to Davenham.

Motorists were advised to take an alternative route through Winsford and return to the A566 further down. The detour was in operation during the worst of the rush hour from 8am-9am.

Nobody was injured, but the accident has triggered renewed calls for traffic calming measures on the road where both carriageways have experienced several accidents in the past few years.

Davenham Parish Council chairman Ben Coker said the council had been calling for traffic calming measures, but so far without success.

He said: 'There have been a number of accidents in that particular area and while I cannot comment on this particular accident because I do not know the facts, I can say that the parish council would like to see some traffic calming measures introduced including a reduction in the speed limit from 70mph.'
