NEW rural bus services to Chester and Northwich are proving to be a great success, and have been praised by passengers.
Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Integrated Transport Service reviewed bus services in rural areas surrounding Chester, asking parish councils and bus passengers for their thoughts on public transport in their area.
Two new services have been introduced, supported by the Council and in the case of the 83 service part of the route is supported by Cheshire East Council.
Bulkeley, Peckforton, Bunbury, Beeston, Tiverton and Huxley are now served by the 83 service to Chester every Tuesday allowing three hours in the city. This typically carries 20 passengers, one day attracting 34 passengers. The bus leaves Bulkeley at 9.40am, Tiverton at 10am and Huxley at 10.05am it arrives in Chester at 10.30am.
Utkinton, Tarporley, Eaton, Little Budworth and Whitegate now have a service to Northwich. This C 87 Friday service is also attracting regular users. It leaves Utkinton at 9.50am, Eaton at 10:05 and Little Budworth at 10.15am and arrives in Northwich at 10.35am. The return journey takes place at 12.30pm from Northwich.
Both services are operated by Vale Travel under contract to Cheshire West and Chester Council.
Councillor Neil Ritchie, Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Environment Executive Member said: “It’s great to hear about how it’s been possible to introduce new bus services specifically for rural communities and most importantly, that residents are making such good use of it.
“We call these Route & Branch reviews and they are based on speaking to local people and parish councils, and understanding the communities’ needs and this demonstrates what can be achieved”
Highways and Transportation Committee Chairman Councillor Norman Wright said: “It is extremely pleasing that both these bus services are such a success.
“They are an excellent example of the Council listening to the views of residents and our funding has created two well-used bus services.”
Regular passenger Les Catterall said: “I frequently use these bus services and can say that it’s really appreciated by every body. Apart from the time for shopping in Chester, the ride on the bus is a friendly and pleasant part of our trip out. Our regular driver Gillian Zor always makes us welcome and looks after us”
