RESIDENTS in rural Cheshire are finding they are receiving their post more than a fortnight after it was sent due to Royal Mail sorting office delays.

The Warrington sorting office, which covers much of the area, is struggling to cope after the backlog caused by the weather and Christmas.

In December Royal Mail figures revealed that the CW postcode which covers the Crewe, Nantwich and the Tarporley area was found to be the second worst performing postcode for deliveries in the country. This comes just months after the Crewe sorting office, which previously covered the area, was closed.

Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson has now demanded a fortnightly update from Royal Mail so he can monitor the progress of deliveries in the area because of the ‘shocking drop in service quality’.

“This is hitting everyone hard, from businesses to residents and the visually impaired who, upsettingly, are not receiving their talking newspaper tapes.” he said.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We are very sorry if any Christmas mail posted by the recommended posting dates did not arrive in time. We did deliver by Christmas the vast majority of the almost two billion letters, cards, packets and parcels posted in the run-up to Christmas. We always welcome hearing from any customer who has a concern or a query about the service.”
