CHESHIRE police are teaming up with forces across the UK in a drive to stamp out cash-in-transit robberies.

Officers who have been leading investigations into a series of robberies in Widnes, Runcorn and surrounding areas, including cash delivery vans, cash machines and bookmakers, were last week represented at a conference hosted by West Mercia police force.

Detective Sergeant Dave Walsh has taken the reins of the newly-formed robbery unit for Cheshire's northern policing area, which covers Halton.

He said the unit's focus is on commercial robberies because the use of weapons is 'significantly higher'.

The conference was attended by representatives from 34 forces, including Cheshire police and Merseyside police, who operate on the Widnes borders.
