COMMUTERS and shoppers making their way into the city centre for the next two weeks can look forward to a series of traffic delays and roadworks.

Remedial work is to be carried out to finish a scheme put in place last year on St Martin’s Way flyover as well as an underpass which provides access to the Princess Street car park. It begins on July 7 and should last about two weeks.

Work will be carried out from 9.30am-3.30pm or after 6.30pm if necessary between Monday and Friday. While this is under way there will be one traffic lane open in each direction.

Cheshire County Council highways and transportation executive member Eveleigh Moore-Dutton said: “We apologise if these road works, both off peak, cause traffic delays. However, it is important that the work is completed.

“St Martin’s Way will be affected for two weeks and everything will be done to monitor traffic flows. No work on St Martin’s Way will be carried out at weekends.”

However, on the weekend of July 5-6, Liverpool Road between the Brook Lane roundabout and the Shell garage will be closed between 8am Saturday and 8pm Sunday.

The resurfacing work - removing the existing road surface and replacing it with new asphalt - will cost approximately £30,000.

Spokesperson for Cheshire County Council, Shirley Wingfield, said: “A diversion route will be in operation which includes Countess Way and Parkgate Road.

“We have worked closely with the signal department to look at phasing out signals to cope with traffic flow and we have also sent letters telling local residents and businesses about the work that is being carried out and there will be access provided for residents.”
