We’re warned that thieves are on the prowl for gifts left under the Christmas tree during the festive season – but what about the possibility of the trees themselves being pinched?

The Chronicle can reveal that a total of 204 Christmas trees were reported stolen to Cheshire police in the last two Decembers.

According to figures released by the force under the Freedom of Information Act, 200 were reported nicked in one burglary in a building other than a dwelling in Macclesfield two years ago.

That same December in the town, one was reported stolen in an ‘other theft’, while two trees were reported as having been shoplifted in separate incidents in Chester and Widnes.

Last December, police received just one report of a stolen Christmas tree, in Chester, which was recorded as an ‘other theft’.

Blue Christmas

Cheshire Constabulary is reminding people how to stay safe and keep their homes secure during the festive period through its campaign Blue Christmas.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Roberts said: “We recognise that Christmas is a time to have fun, and we’re here to support our communities to ensure that everyone is able to have a safe and enjoyable time throughout the holiday period.

“I want to send out a clear message to anyone planning to go out in Cheshire and commit crime or act in an unacceptable way that your behaviour will not be tolerated. We’re here for you working over Christmas to stop the festivities turning blue.”
