PROUD grandparents and toddlers braved the rain to plant thousands of bulbs to brighten up their village.

On Saturday dozens of adults and children took to the streets of Kingsley to dig and plant 9,000 bulbs ready to welcome residents and visitors to the village next spring.

The planting session, which saw teams of gardening enthusiasts gather at five main points into the village, saw 55 adults and ten children pick up their shovels and spades in a massive community event.

One of the residents said: “I really enjoyed it.

“Admittedly the digging was helped by the fact it was sunny but even so I was amazed at how fast we managed to get things done.”

The planting project came as a result of questionnaires concerning the Parish Plan of Kingsley and subsequent meetings over the winter months.

Resident Catherine Tweedie developed the plan and after months of contacting people and taking photos of existing flowers in the village she got together a team of volunteers to take part in the mass planting session.

Catherine said the team were grateful to the parish council and Streetscene and all the residents who turned out to make the day such a success.
