RESIDENTS across the county are being reminded by the Cheshire Waste Partnership to recycle Christmas trees and cards.

The Partnership – which comprises the county council and the six district councils – is supporting The Woodland Trust and Recycle Now national campaigns.

A range of collection and bring schemes are being run in individual district areas to help people recycle their real Christmas trees.

There will also be special facilities for recycling Christmas trees at 12 of the county council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres where they will be transformed into compost.

Full details of Christmas tree and card recycling schemes provided in the six districts can be found at www.recycleforcheshire.org.uk

The household Waste Recycling Centres taking part in Christmas tree recycling include: Bumpers Lane, Chester; Garth Road, Ellesmere Port; Clayhill Industrial Estate, Neston.

The Woodland Trust hopes to raise funds to plant 24,000 trees across the UK by collecting 100 million cards. Cards can also be recycled.

Cheshire Waste Partnership chairman Chris Nield said: “Nationally, eight million Christmas trees will be thrown away after the festivities, generating more than 16,000 tonnes of additional rubbish.

“Cheshire residents did an excellent job recycling their trees and cards last year. Let’s see if we can beat last year’s record.”

Last year in Cheshire 37 tonnes of Christmas cards were collected for recycling and this was up on the year before figure of 28 tonnes.
