The Rector of Chester is “not a happy bunny” after a football was apparently kicked with force through an historic window at St John the Baptist Church by Grosvenor Park.

Rev David Chesters, who has called in police, believes the ball was deliberately kicked by an adult judging by the strength and height the ball smashed through the south window – even bending the lead frame.

He said: ”The Rector of Chester is not a happy bunny! It must have been a hefty kick. I have been discussing it today with the police. I think it must have been an adult it was so powerful.” “

Rev Chesters said about £500 of the repair bill would be covered by insurance and the church would have to find the other £500. He is considering asking city businesses for help.

“As a church we can’t really afford it. I may ask Chester businesses why not sponsor our save the window campaign?” he added.

The window is plain glass made up of tiny diamond segments and was renovated in the 19th century but may include glass from the 18th century.

St John the Baptist Church is a Grade I listed building – and part of a scheduled ancient monument – but has been plagued by vandalism over the years.

Three years ago damage was caused to the Victorian Nunc Dimittis window, which overlooks the gardens at the rear, possibly deliberately or may be accidentally by youngsters playing football.

Previously yobs have damaged the great east window by throwing stones, removed slates from the roof and smashed flood lights.

Security measures including CCTV and anti-climb paint are in use but Rev Chesters does not wish to turn the church into a fortress. Rather he wants to encourage more visitors to the church which was Chester’s first cathedral.
