FOUR senior management jobs attracting salaries of more than £100,000 a year are up for grabs at the new shadow Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The roles, all advertised at £108,000, are for Director of Resources, Director of Regeneration and Culture, Director of Children and Young People’s Services and Director of Environment Services.

By way of comparison, the current Director of Environment, Tom McCabe, who is responsible for the entire county, earns £111,000.

Also available is the role of Director of Area and Community Services on a salary of about £90,000. The wage for the post of Director of Adult Services is to be confirmed.

The jobs are being advertised following the appointment of Steve Robinson as chief executive who will earn about £173,000 per annum compared with Jeremy Taylor, chief executive of Cheshire County Council, who takes home £170,000 a year.

Mr Robinson, who takes up the role from October 1, is the serving chief executive of Stoke-on-Trent City Council which has been transformed from a one-star failing council to a three-star high performing council within 12 months.

Two groups of senior managers are being created under the new regime because Cheshire is being split into two with Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East Councils serving the county’s population.

But Cheshire West shadow council leader Mike Jones said this was not a wasteful use of resources because single tier local government means many more senior management roles will disappear when the county council and district councils are abolished.

Cllr Jones hopes many of the posts will be filled internally. However, he said that the authority is keen to “get the best person for the job” and not every internal candidate will be successful.
