RECORD crowds descended on the village of Marbury for its annual merry days.

Despite a damp Saturday, organisers say there were up to 2,000 people on the fields on Sunday determined to enjoy the sunny weather.

The main attractions were the mock battles staged by the Dark Age re-enactment group The Vikings who were brandishing axes and broadswords.

In true traditional English village fayre style, the event also included attractions including vintage motor cycles, classic cars, vintage tractors and agricultural equipment, trade stands, fair stalls and tombola, book, plant and cake stalls and children’s entertainment.

There was also Scalextric racing, steam boats, steam railway rides, puppet show, model aircraft display, fun run, maypole dancing, brass band and organ music. The main arena also hosted a dog display team.

Event spokesman Richard Sheard said: “The Sunday was a particularly good day with a record number of people. The sun shone and the crowds flocked in. We do not yet have the figures but we expect to have a raised a lot of money for the church.

“It was a magnificent occasion and it was very well supported by everybody, a huge thank you to all of them.”

Marbury Merry Days is organised by parochial church council members, with all proceeds going towards the upkeep of Marbury’s St Michael & All Angels’ Church.
