Poor rail conditions are causing delays for passengers travelling between Chester and Manchester on Monday (November 16).

Hold-ups of 25 minutes on Northern Rail trains began at 8pm and are expected to last until about 11pm.

The route affected stretches from Manchester Piccadilly to Chester via and Northwich.

Network Rail said poor track conditions between Altrincham and Chester were the source of the problem.

A broken down freight train is also causing delays for passengers heading to Crewe from London.

The alternate route from Manchester through Warrington, Frodsham and Helsby is unaffected.
