RADIATION free breast screening is to be available at a city centre health clinic.

For one day only, on Tuesday, December 5, the Better Health Clinic in Hunter Street will be offering digital infrared thermal imaging for anyone with health concerns.

Practitioner Romey Barnes says she is keen to make people in the area aware of the service.

'Thermal Imaging is an ideal way to screen for breast cancer and to help visualise and deal with undiagnosed pain,' she said.

'It consists of taking a picture made up of the heat signature that comes off the body.

'There is no contact with the body and there is no radiation exposure to the body.

'It is just like taking a photograph.'

In clinical trials, the procedure is said to have been shown to be a suitable complement to mammography and in view of the exposure to radiation involved in mammography, it is described as being far safer.

It is said to be of particular benefit to women with breast reconstruction and can also be carried out on younger women in a high-risk bracket.

Thermal imaging can also help anyone suffering with pain for any reason, particularly if the cause is not clear from other scans and x-rays.

Thermal imaging can help to pinpoint the origin of the pain which can help with diagnosis, according to the clinic.

Apart from places such as London, Cambridge and towns in the south, Chester is the only city in the north that has thermal imaging available.

The operators will be visiting the clinic between 8.30am and 6.30pm on December 5.
