A CREWE man who carried out a 'savage' racial attack on a Muslim fast food delivery driver has been jailed for two years.
The sentence has been welcomed by police and ethnic minority groups in the town.
David Clarke, 21, of Frank Bott Avenue, was sentenced at Knutsford Crown Court on Monday, after pleading guilty to racially aggravated assault causing actual bodily harm and taking a car without consent.
The victim, Safeer Mohammed, was dragged from his car and punched, kicked and stamped on during the attack on August 11 last year by a gang of three men.
The court heard how the defendant had been part of a group of men walking down Timbrell Avenue on the day in question. An argument ensued with Mr Mohammed and he was then assaulted.
After the court hearing investigating officer, Detective Constable Mark Cook, said: 'This was an entirely unprovoked and savage attack. It appears to have been an opportunist attack with the initial motive being theft or robbery.
'Mr Safeer Mohammed was just doing his job, delivering fast food, when he was dragged from his car and then punched, kicked and stamped on by several people who were chanting racial abuse.
'Mr Mohammed had no idea when the beating would stop and he sincerely believed that he had died during the assault. It was a terrifying situation.'
At the time of the attack, officers met with local leaders of ethnic minority groups to assure them this was an opportunist event and not organised racial harassment.
Jubeyar Ahmed, a member of the Sha-jalal mosque in Walthall Street, who engaged in the talks, said: 'People cannot get away with behaving like this. It is a good thing he has been brought to justice.
'This country is becoming more and more multicultural and we all need to open our minds and accept each other.
The 157 days Clarke has served on remand will be taken from his sentence.
