BOOKWORMS from Chester’s Queen’s School have won a Cheshire schools’ quiz with the highest score in the competition’s 30-year history.
Year 8 students Isabelle Ardon, Rhiannon Jones and Mareen Zachariah of Chester and Fiona Stockton of Frodsham won the Cheshire Inter-School Book Quiz.
Encouraged by the school’s librarian, Gilly Mayes, the foursome competed in six tough rounds, involving twenty seven schools, to reach the final at St Mary’s Centre against Eaton Bank, Birchwood and Hartford.
Author of the Doomspell trilogy Cliff McNish presented the delighted winners with their cup.
Isabelle said: “ It was a very exciting final and we were really happy to win.”
Ms Mayes added: "The girls worked hard to achieve their place in the final, giving up their time to read the books and to answer the questions in each round. “We did practice a lot over break and dinner times which obviously paid off!
“I'm delighted that they did so well as the competition has encouraged their reading habit and inspired their peers.
“Taking part has been a real pleasure and ultimately very rewarding.”
