GIANT HQ has received news from the Palace that Her Majesty The Queen sends her best wishes to Chester the Giant City and wishes the city a “most memorable series of events” for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
This news is particularly welcome for Nick Elphick, the sculptor of the Queen’s head that has been replicated for all 60 QEII giants.
Nick said: “My main aim for the QEII sculpture was to make the Queen feel proud and for it to be the best likeness to her as possible and all that she represents.
“The fact that she has said that she likes the giants is just wonderful. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to create the face of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Chester.”
Giants project manager Kristine Szulik added: “We shall definitely be sending a selection of photos of the parade to the palace and hope that all our hard work meets with her majesty’s approval.
“We have certainly had enormous fun working on the giant project and we hope that everyone who comes along to the parade sees this and enjoys what we, and the many communities involved, have all achieved.”
So far, dozens of communities have spent months working on their individual giants, making their costumes, so that they look their best when they take part in the parade.
Businesses and groups who have their own giant include Bentley Motors, The Queen’s School, Chester, Sainsbury’s, Chester Scouts and Guides and Warrington Council.
There’s just over one month to go until the streets of Chester are filled with a magnificent display of 60 QEII giants who will join together in a wonderful parade through the streets to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on June 4.
However, for those who have seen all the wonderful work that has taken place so far and wished they had been involved, there is still time.
Youth groups, schools and community projects can still adopt a giant to create as their own. Just a few are remaining and are waiting for a good home.
Kristine said: “We have had some fantastic feedback from the groups who have been working with the giants so far. They are really excited about the parade and to see all the other giants.”
