QUEENMANIA will break out at a Chester high school next week as students set out to prove that We Will Rock You.

The annual production at Upton High School, masteminded by head of drama Chris Tierney, is always one of the highlights of their year and 2007 promises to be no exception.

The shows are always ambitious and in past years have included Les Miserables, Oliver!, Copacabana and last year's 70s themed Disco Inferno.

The 70s are revisited again this year as the music of legendary rock band Queen forms the backdrop for We Will Rock You which features Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Radio Ga-Ga.

Normally the shows take place before Easter but many of the students were involved in the recent Shakespeare Schools Festival.

This saw them stage a truncated version of Much Ado About Nothing at the Stiwt Theatre near Wrexham in February.

But now it's all systems go for a show that involves young people from every year in the school, either on stage or behind the scenes.

They have been rehearsing for weeks after school and at weekends, one of which was spent at the Menai Centre in Anglesey.

Tickets are £6 for the three nights of the show on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week (May 1-3).

Members of the newly formed Parent-Teacher Association at Upton High will be manning refreshment stalls during the interval for the first time, offering tea, coffee and orange juice for thirsty audiences.

Proceeds from the sale of these items will go towards the school's recently launched fund to help Upton High gain specialist humanities status.

The school needs to raise £50,000 as part of its bid to gain this status which will open up all kinds of opportunities for students and will also see an injection of funding worth almost £1 million over the next four years.
