A 10-YEAR-OLD girl from Chester is the county’s only remaining entrant in a national language contest.

Amy Stairmand, a pupil at The Firs School, Plas Newton Lane, is finalist in the Eurotalk Junior Language Challenge.

Two other pupils - Abigail Fisher, 11, and James Clinton-Hunt, 9 - made the regional finals.

Head teacher Margaret Denton said: “The competition is organised to raise money for under-developed countries, so it is a worthwhile event.

“More than 2,000 children entered the competition nationally, so that shows just how well all three have done so far.”

Amy had to learn Japanese for the competition and as a reward for her efforts she was awarded a special T-shirt featuring a Japanese Manga character saying "Hello" in the Klingon language from Star Trek.

Amy will travel to London’s Olympia on October 15 for the final.
