A VILLAGE pub in a conservation area may have to remove two controversial signs.

The borough's planning committee refused a retrospective application for the signs after hearing the site was subject to an enforcement complaint in February.

Councillors decided the two signs at The Old Quay in Station Road, Parkgate harm the character and appearance of the Parkgate Conservation Area.

The retrospective application for them, submitted by Whitbread Restaurants, was unanimously rejected by the committee. They may now have to be removed. nThe committee had no objections to a single-storey side extension at 6 Yewdale Drive in Whitby.

The disabled adaptation was proposed by Mr Turner.

Planning officers said the family's circumstances and the fact it was not possible to extend the property at the rear outweighed the loss of amenity.
