OBJECTIONS and a petition were raised to longer hours at a pub at the heart of a small village.

The White Horse on Village Road in Great Barrow applied to vary its premises licence from its current closing time of 11.20pm, Chester's licensing act sub committee was told.

It intended to open until 12.30am on Sundays to Thursdays and until 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The city council was told the changes would enhance pub and family entertainment while reducing the focus on alcohol.

A 30 minute extension of opening hours after the end of alcohol sales would promote the prevention of crime and disorder as the last drink would be consumed less quickly.

Regular noise checks would be carried out during entertainment and notices would ask customers to leave quietly.

Mrs S M Smith of Great Barrow Post Office submitted a petition opposing the changes with more than 30 signatures.

The application was granted subject to opening hours of midnight Sundays to Thursdays and 1am Fridays and Saturdays with the sale of alcohol ending half an hour earlier.

Conditions were imposed to control noise and light, a front patio area should close at 9pm and a beer garden at the rear at 10.30pm. No more than 12 live music events should be held each year and Mr Butterworth was asked to hold quarterly meetings with residents.
