A GRIEVING Malpas mum arrested during a prison protest will stand trial in July.

Pauline Campbell was arrested at HMP Eastwood Park in Gloucestershire in January and charged with aggravated trespass.

The demonstration was against the death of mother-of-five Caroline Powell, 26, who died in the care of the jail earlier that month.

Mrs Campbell's court case has been listed for trial from July 26-27 before a stipendiary ma gistr ate.

Mrs Campbell, whose daughter Sarah died in 2003 at Styal Prison within a few days of being sentenced to a jail term for manslaughter, has lodged an appeal against a decision to refuse her legal aid.

Before the remand hearing on unconditional bail, she said: 'It is shameful that this court seeks to criminalise me for protesting against women dying at the hands of the state, especially when I am a grieving mother and my only child died at the hands of the state.'

Mrs Campbell previously declared her intention to plead 'not guilty' to the charge.

'I have no regrets about holding the demonstration,' she said. 'I fail to understand what useful purpose is served in making me stand criminal trial. It is a waste of the court's time and a waste of public money.

'Furthermore, I consider the refusal to grant legal aid is an affront to the principle of access to justice.'
