THE 35th annual Chester Rotary Raft Race spectacular takes place again this year on Sunday (July 4) on the River Dee near the Suspension Bridge.

Last year more than 40 rafts battled out along the 400m course finishing over the weir and similar numbers are again expected to join in the fun.

The raft theme this time is Great Historical Events Through The Ages.

Race organiser Brian Price said: “We have entries from many varied and interesting craft which should provide a colourful and entertaining spectacle for the large crowds that normally witness this free to watch event in the Groves”.

Rafts are on the water near the Boat House Inn preparing for the start from around 10.45am. The best viewing is from the Groves and along the towpath from the Suspension Bridge through to The Meadows from where most of the rafts are prepared and launched.

Proceeds from the event are for Help for Heroes.

Main sponsorship has come from Bell Developments and City Furniture with other sponsors Urenco, Cheshire Waste and Skip Hire, Signworld and Liberty Properties
