A SPORTS film receiving its nationwide premiere in Ellesmere Port almost became a silent movie.

Michael Jordan - To The Max was due to be shown to the borough council's licensing committee at the Warner Village Cinema in Cheshire Oaks.

But the viewing had to be postponed after it was delivered without a soundtrack.

The 45-minute film, about the American basketball legend's life and career, was shot in 2000 using the exclusive 8-70 format.

The Iwerks screen in Warner Village is the only facility in the UK which has the technology to screen it.

Before it can be shown to the public, the film has to be given a rating, such as PG or 12A.

Because it is the only cinema to be showing it, Warner Village was advised by the British Board of Film Classification to approach the borough council, as the licensing authority, in order for the rating to be awarded.

A screening was scheduled for Wednesday morning, but it was cancelled the night before.

Cllr Myles Hogg, who sits on the licensing committee, said the film had been sent without the soundtrack and another screening would be arranged shortly.

He said the committee had never been asked to rate a film before. Its usual role is to grant licences to people such as taxi operators.

Cllr Hogg has seen films screened at the Iwerks previously, but says they have to be short films as the technology cannot yet handle longer productions.
