GANGS of conmen are targeting pubs, bars and cafes and stealing phones while unaware customers help them with directions to the train station.

Over the past few weeks the thieves have stolen dozens of phones from across Chester city centre, walking into popular takeaways and bars before distracting customers by pretending to be lost tourists.

The thieves, who are described as a gang of male Eastern Europeans, are said to place a map over the table where the customer is sitting before snatching the phone, wallet or iPod hidden underneath.

Police are now warning residents and visitors to be on their guard and keep belongings safe and hidden so thieves are not given an easy ride.

Sergeant Andy Burrage said: “These type of offences have increased within the last couple of weeks.

“The offenders are not using a particularly sophisticated method but it is clearly working for them. Members of the public can easily frustrate their criminal efforts by keeping mobile telephones off tables and out of view when in pubs, restaurants and cafes.

“Whilst our enquiries to trace those responsible continue we ask members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to contact city police immediately.”
