CYCLISTS are being told to secure their bikes properly after a series of city centre thefts in Chester.

Inspector Mel Williams said: “Unfortunately many cycles stolen are either left unlocked or secured with poor quality security devices. Last week I observed a young man leave his bike lying on the floor on the pavement whilst he went into a shop for about two minutes. I picked his bike up and advised him of the error of his ways when he came out of the shop.

“Had it been a thief and not myself he would have been another crime statistic.”

He added: “Several arrests have been made but until owners take a more responsible attitude to the subject we will continue to have a steady number of reports of thefts.”
