WEAPONS and drugs were found on teenagers after police swooped on a gang of Runcorn youths who they believe are behind attacks on teenagers in Frodsham.

The gang were stopped by police officers using special powers in Frodsham's Castle Park during an operation.

Vale Royal Chief Inspector Paul McHugh gave his officers special stop and search powers in response to intelligence reports that Runcorn gangs were coming to the area with weapons looking for trouble.

Officers discovered a large group in the car park of Castle Park, most of whom ran off on seeing officers.

Three adults were eventually searched and two had cannabis on them and were given a verbal warning.

Officers then searched three vehicles and found offensive weapons in two of the cars - two pieces of wood on a chain and a hammer.

Two men were arrested and taken to Northwich police station, interviewed and bailed pending a decision by CPS on whether to prosecute.

Police spot-checked five males aged 14-16 at the back of Eddisbury Square, including two youths who had run off and were caught in Alvanley Terrace.

Sgt Pete Minghella, of the Frodsham Community Action Team (CAT), said the majority of the 12-15-strong group seemed to be teenage girls.

'Going by their size and stature they must have been 14 at the very most, but there they were in a park with four males over 19 years of age.'

Sgt Minghella added: 'We had reports of people coming over here from Runcorn with weapons. As a result of that operation we have spoken to the main group who went home.'
