THE COMMUNITY Action Team reported no major trouble at the Frodsham Christmas Festival.

They employed special stop and search powers, used in the anticipation of violence, following intelligence that there may have been weapons.

On the Friday evening, police searched about 10 males aged 13-17 on Main Street, with others around the front and rear of Eddisbury Square.

Sgt Pete Minghella, of the area's Community Action Team, said a small amount of cannabis was found on a youth from Helsby who was given a verbal warning.

He said that an item that could be used to cause damage or cause injury - a bike brake pad - was also confiscated and destroyed.

Sgt Minghella said: 'If people are going around with weapons thinking they are for their own protection they are mistaken. It may be youthful naivety thinking if they carry a weapon they will remain safe, but they may end up in court.'

British Transport Police also ejected a man from Frodsham railway station for behaving in a drunk and disorderly manner.

On Saturday police did not use the Section 60 powers from the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.

Two mobile CCTV units also did the rounds. One, managed by the community safety wardens at Vale Royal Borough Council, patrolled areas including Castle Park, Park Lane, Eddisbury Square and Sandfields, on both nights. The other, run by British Transport Police, filmed at Frodsham station.

Sgt Minghella added that his team had found it 'a joy to police' the Christmas Festival, owing to the atmosphere.
