ROAD markings caused confusion for police officers at the Tarporley carnival.

At the village festivities on Saturday, two police officers were spotted issuing parking warning notices to cars that were legally parked on Tarporley High Street.

The cars were parked outside the chemists where a bus stop used to be. It was moved down the road more than 12 months ago and despite two attempts, Cheshire County Council has failed to remove the road markings.

Residents who spotted the police ticketing the legally parked cars told the officers the vehicles could park there, but the parking warning notices remained in place.

Parish councillors at their meeting on Monday voiced their concern and want the county to remove the markings properly to avoid further confusion.

Pharmacist Peter Cope, of Rowlands Pharmacy in Tarporley, who saw the officers issuing the notices, said: “I did go out and inform them that people can park there. The road markings are still visible and it does cause confusion. I have had several people come into the chemist, asking whether they are allowed to park there.”

Bob Miller, 87, of Rathbone Park, said: “I was out taking photographs of the carnival as I do every year when I spotted these two policemen I have never seen before issuing what looked like tickets to cars sat outside the chemist.

“I went over and told them the cars were now allowed to park there, but they still left the tickets on.

“It is so ridiculous that they haven’t removed those lines properly, they have been back twice to try to remove the lines but they still haven’t done it properly.

“The police should know, but also the lines should be removed.”

Parish councillor Roy Craven said: “The bus stop was moved more than 12 months ago and the lines should have been removed properly. I don’t blame the police, they were doing their job. I just feel sorry for those who are getting tickets.”

Tarporley PC Chris McCourt said the road markings have caused confusion.

He said: “The officers were issuing warning notices to those drivers. The warning notices are not kept on record. We were waiting for clarification from the council that those markings have been removed.”
