A CRACKDOWN on careless motorists intent on breaking road safety laws is continuing across rural Cheshire in the coming months.

Cheshire Police’s Western Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team has been using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.

Throughout June and July officers checked more than 6,000 motorists who passed along some of the rural roads around Chester and seized cars from drivers found without insurance. Those using their mobile phone while driving were fined and two were arrested for driving while disqualified.

Inspector Phil Hodgson of the Western Rural NPT said: “The aim of this operation is to disrupt any criminals using the road network to commit crime in the area as well to ensure the safety of other road users by checking vehicles.

“This operation is ongoing and we will be monitoring different roads in the area throughout the summer period to ensure the continued safety of all motorists.”

Due to the success of the operation, it is due to run into September.
