AN INVESTIGATION is under way after a police car on an emergency call was involved in a collision with another vehicle, leaving four nurses needing urgent hospital treatment.

The incident, which happened shortly after midnight on Sunday, involved a police car travelling along Cronton Road when it was in collision with a Toyota Yaris at the junction with Smithy Lane.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman confirmed that the police vehicle had been passing through a red light at the time of the impact.

The four women, who were off duty at the time, were taken to Whiston Hospital. Three of the women were released from hospital by Tuesday and a fourth woman was still at Whiston Hospital on Tuesday night.

A bystander at the scene told the Weekly News: 'It is unusual that something like this occurs in Cronton as it is a relatively quite village, but judging by the wreckage left it's a good job that nobody was fatally hurt.'

Another said: 'The emergency services were on the scene in a flash and a number of vehicles attended the scene. They had to dig up the railings to help get the people out and they were there until 4 o'clock on Sunday morning doing their best to clean it up.'

A Cheshire police spokesman said: 'Shortly after midnight on Sunday, a police car responding to an emergency call was involved in a collision with a Toyota Yaris.

'The police car, which was marked, had its sirens sounding at the time. The four women who were in the other car were taken to Whiston Hospital and none of their injuries were life threatening.

'A full and thorough investigation is being carried out into the circumstances of the crash and the matter has been voluntarily referred to the Police Complaints Authority.'
