A BRAVE shop assistant fought off armed robbers as they raided a Saltney bookmakers.

At just after midday on Easter Sunday two masked men entered Corbetts bookmakers on Chester Street and threatened assistants with knives.

But the robbers fled the scene empty handed after a brave member of staff tackled them before calling the police.

Officers searched the surrounding area for the men, who drove off in a black car, while the police helicopter searched the area from the skies but failed to trace the robbers.

The armed raid comes less than two weeks after two men threatened staff and made off with £5,000 from the shop’s safe.

Police are appealing for witnesses and are asking anyone with any information to call DC Iestyn Lewis Jones at Chester CID on 0845 458 0000.
