A police investigation has been launched after five men were injured during an assault in Chester.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning (September 29) when three men, from the North Wales area were approached by a group of men and women in an  alleyway near the canal off Russell Street.

They launched an attack on the men, which  was witnessed by three other men from  Ellesmere Port who attempted to help them,  but found themselves also being attacked.

One of the victims was thrown into the canal  before the offenders ran off down the canal  towards Hoole.

One of the victims, a 28-year-old man from  North Wales, suffered a head injury as a result  of the attack and is currently in hospital in a  stable condition.

The other victims, a 27-year-old man and  43-year-old man also from North Wales, and  two 19-year-old men from Ellesmere Port were  also injured, suffering cuts and bruises.

The offenders are described as a group of  men and women, and one of the males was  wearing a a blue shirt with a full sleeve tattoo.

One of the women is also said to have had  long blonde hair.
