CITY centre police are warning under-age drinkers that borrowed identity documents are not passports to clubs.

Chester Inner Community Action Team officers say friends who share and deface passports and driving licences in an attempt to gain entry to nightclubs are running the risk of prosecution and financial charges.

Sgt Mandy Shaw said: 'We know that underage people are trying to get into clubs using documents which aren't theirs.

'We will seize these licences and passports and return them to the DVLA and Passport Office. Consideration will be given to prosecuting people who commit criminal offences and there may be some financial charge from the authorities for the return of documents.

'It's not exactly the ideal end to a night out and I urge people who allow their documents to be used in this way to seriously reconsider. It simply isn't worth the serious consequences.'

The police efforts have the full support of city licensed premises such as city club RBs, which pro-actively checks all ID documents.

Licensee Dave Cooper said: 'We will not tolerate underage drinking and we make rigorous checks on anyone we suspect is not old enough to enter the club.'

RBs' door staff have already seized a number of documents and their checks will continue to ensure the message that people aged under 18 are not welcome is driven home.
