A CHESTER poet has won an international award for his work.

Clive McWilliam, of Queen’s Park, has won the Virginia Warbey Poetry Prize 2008. He was presented with the award at a ceremony in Winchester by the poet Gillian Clarke.

Clive’s poem One Place Twice won him first prize of £800 and two more of his poems were longlisted.

Clive, 55, started writing poetry four years ago after he had begun a creative writing course at Bishop’s Bluecoat CE High School.

The father-of-three said: “It’s very encouraging to get feedback as a writer and feel that you are going in the right direction,” he said. He is a member of the Poem Shed, a Chester based poetry group run by novelist and poet Gil McEvoy. He is currently working on his first collection of poems.
