A BRAVE boy battling leukaemia has captured the hearts of the region's top rugby players.

Liam Wynne, 13, of Cranberry Lane in Alsager has received donations from hundreds of people across the town.

His original mission was to raise enough cash to send himself and his family on a dream holiday to Florida.

The Sandbach School pupil easily surpassed his £8,000 target and flew out to America in March.

Since raising the funds Liam has continued to see an influx of cash from

generous groups across the region and has put the money to good use with donations to charities, including Alder Hey Childrens Hospital in Liverpool.

The latest group to join Liam's drive is Sandbach Rugby Union Football Club, which handed over £2,100 to the youngster.

The club auctioned off a signed England shirt donated to Liam by England and Sale Sharks star Mark Cueto, who is originally from Alsager.

Liam had asked if anyone at the club was interested in the shirt and the club offered to auction it at their annual dinner on May 12, even securing an appearance from Cueto himself.

The club's social secretary John Stubbs said: 'We were happy to help Liam and hope the money will go some way to helping him with his illness.

'I think this shows that we are more than just a rugby club and try to help the whole of the community when we can.'

Liam's dad Chris said: 'The money will be passed on to Alder Hey where Liam is being treated.

'It's a boost to them but it's always a boost to Liam because he gets to pass the money on.

'His treatment is very expensive and he likes to feel he is doing all he can to help. We want to send a big thanks to everyone at the rugby club and to all the people who have helped Liam since he was diagnosed.'
