CHESTER’S goal of becoming a must-see European city is revealed as a key element of the city council’s budget proposals for the next financial year.

The Chester Renaissance programme is expected to generate £1.4 billion of investment over the coming years and the council’s new administration is determined to give the project its full support.

Working with funding organisations, the range of projects will be financed through securing external funds for some elements, match funding for others and city council cash where appropriate.

Renaissance projects the budget has earmarked this year include:

£160,000 of council investment in the City Walls,

The Parks for People scheme at Grosvenor Park,

An interpretation strategy outlining how and where Chester’s history should be told,

Master plans for areas around the amphitheatre area, castle, cathedral and the Rows,

Public realm works,

£250,000 of Connect 2 lottery cash secured for Chester Greenways to improve green links around Chester.

Council leader Cllr Margaret Parker said “Our increased investment in Chester Renaissance aims to turn Chester into a must-see European city.”

Deputy leader Cllr Stephen Mosley added: “Chester is an ancient city whose economy depends on tourism, but for too long our heritage was forgotten. The new administration will support our city’s heritage.”

The budget proposals are currently out to consultation and will be presented to full council next month.
