A CANAL boat marina will open after planning chiefs gave the project the green light.
Work on the 150-boat facility at Park Farm, on the Trent and Mersey Canal at Whatcroft, will start next year - and developers are confident it will prove a success with boaters on the busy waterway.
The council received 31 letters of objection, but planning chiefs ruled it would not have a significant detrimental impact on the area.
Bosses at Anderton-based Travel Reign are delighted at the news, and hope to start work as soon as they have received a copy of a list of conditions planners attached to the approval.
Co-owner David Massey said: 'We are very pleased that it was approved by a clear majority. We will be doing some preparatory work but we cannot start the main work until next spring as there is a crop on the field and there is other preparation work that we cannot do in the winter.'
The marina was one of two planned in the area - the other is subject to an appeal after being refused planning permission - and had been reduced in size at the request of planning chiefs.
Mr Massey said: 'The canal is a unique, arterial waterway and large parts of it are lock-free so there is great demand. It would not surprise me if there was scope to expand this marina or build another one in the area.'
He said the company was addressing any ecological concerns about the application. He said: 'We are carrying out plans to mitigate the impact.'
