A WIDNES pensioner says thousands of elderly people in the town are being 'ripped off ' by paying for a prescription for aspirin.

John Barber, 68, of Fairfield Road, says he has been paying £6.80 for aspirin on prescription when he could he could have bought them from the chemist for 80p a pack.

Mr Barber, who needs to take one aspirin a day to thin his blood due to a chest problems, said: 'A new hospital could have been built with all this money that is going straight to the NHS.

'I have been buying prescriptions for years and I could have saved thousands.

boat as I am - it's probably thousands across the borough.

'I hope they are a bit wiser after this.'

Mr Barber says he will take the matter up with Derek Twigg MP and he will insist that he speak to health ministers over the issue.

He added: 'Derek Twigg needs to be notified about this as people like me are being ripped off and all the money is going to pharmaceutical companies instead.

'It's robbery that you can charge £6.80 for a prescription for something simple like aspirin. The thing is, I need it for my health and I have been putting money down the drain.'
