A GROOM accused of burning down his wedding venue has been told by a crown court judge: ‘No more delays’.

Max Henry Kay, 36, of Waylands Drive, Hunts Cross in Liverpool, was arrested on Sunday, June 19 after a fire at Peckforton Castle near Tarporley, where he was married the previous day.

He arrived at Chester Crown Court today with members of his family to attend a plea and case management hearing.

His twin brother Richard and wife Stephanie were both absent.

Defending, Myles Wilson asked Judge Roger Dutton to adjourn the hearing as Mr Kay had changed solicitors.

He explained: “He wasn’t happy with the work they had done.

“We only received the transfer papers on Friday and we need to give Mr Kay time to consult with his counsel, Patrick Thompson.”

Mr Wilson stated that the case is one of causation and will need a forensic examination of the scene.

But prosecutor Duncan Bold said: “The last time this case was before the court, a ‘no later than’ period for this investigation was imposed, which has now expired.

“As far as the papers are concerned the case is ready for trial.”

Judge Roger Dutton said: “I am concerned this is getting old. If it is going to be a trial it is going to get into next year.

“Mr Kay cannot put off proceedings by changing his representation a week before the hearing and the business can’t sit around waiting for experts to come – but it seems I have no option but to agree.

“No further change of lawyers will be sanctioned by the court.”

Speaking to Mr Kay, he added: “Your case comes before the court again on December 2 and that’s when the hearing will take place. It will not be adjourned again.”
