A COUPLE lost their home after failing to pay their Council Tax.

And council chiefs have warned other residents could find themselves on the streets if they fail to meet their oblig ations.

Halton Borough Council took possession of the property on Ashford Way, Widnes, after the owners ran up a Council Tax debt of £2,173.

A charging order was granted by the County Court and an order for sale was obtained from the court in November 2006.

The owners of the property failed to clear the outstanding debt, which resulted in the council enforcing the order.

A spokesman for the revenues and benefits division of the council said charging orders can be applied for from the County Court in the case of owners of property who do not pay their Council Tax.

'If you are having difficulty paying your Council Tax and need to discuss your situation, then please contact us before it gets to this level,' he said.

Residents can get in touch via a Halton Direct Link office or by telephoning 0151 907 8301.
