Over the past several years Chester has proudly been raising funds and some serious noise for Oxjam.
At Oxjam Chester 2014, more than 70 artists, an incredible team of volunteers, and hundreds of festival goers descend upon Chester city centre to help raise money for Oxfam’s fight against poverty.
This weekend Oxjam will take over the Chester Bandstand on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, with a whole host of local acts and activities on show.
Oxjam is Oxfam’s month-long music festival. It runs throughout October with hundreds of events around the UK – all organised by volunteers who know and love their local music scene.
Chester’s multi-venue and multi-arts festival will officially kick-off with a launch night at Telford’s Warehouse on Friday, October 16, where the Galactic Funk Militia and local touring favourites, Broken 3 Ways will perform before the official festival on Saturday, October 17.
Recently Oxjam decided to take part in an 24hour Busk-a-thon. A team of five organisers, all graduates of music from the University of Chester, decided to take on the gruelling task, with a little help from their friends.
Taking place between 12noon on Friday, July 31 until 12noon on Saturday, August 1, Oxjam performed through the night along various stops up and down the Chester highstreet.
In the lead up to the event, members of Oxjam set up sponsorship pages on Everydayhero and through support from friends and family, more than £300 was raised.
Members were joined by other friendly musicians and soon the drum kit, cajon, bongos, melodica and shakey-eggs were out in force.
Eight of the Oxjam members performed into the early hours of the morning, where those that had taken to a night out on the town came and joined them in dance and song.
As morning broke, those that had seen the Oxjam team perform the day before cheered them on and a local brought them tea and a much needed breakfast came courtesy of the Slug & Lettuce and Coffee Crusade.
