A CHESTER jewellery shop manager who has been linked with Chester Cathedral for 20 years says the building is a very special place for him and an important part of Chester.

Owner and manager of Walton's the Jewellers for over 40 years as well as Lowe & Sons, Edward Walton is a non executive director of the cathedral's trading company which includes the cathedral shop and refectory cafe.

The cathedral said: “He is passionate about the city and the cathedral and has given the benefits of his retail and business knowledge to the cathedral.”

Mr Walton said: “The cathedral is a very special place for me.

“It is such an important part of Chester and I am very proud to be able to have been associated in its working life.”

He pointed out there are many more volunteers who have been there much longer and added: “It astounds me that so many people give their time to the cathedral for free and I know how much their contribution is appreciated.”

Mr Walton has agreed to take on the role of volunteer co-ordinator. Cathedral dean, the Very Rev Professor Gordon McPhate said: “I am extremely grateful to Edward for his long service.”
