Motorists using the Posthouse roundabout at the junction between the A55 and the A483, south of Chester, are advised that it will be closed during the night next week while contractors make the finishing touches to the project designed to tackle congestion.
The eastbound exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 October. A diversion will take drivers to the next junction to turn around and come back.
Drivers' delight on social media once the roadworks were removed, an extra lane was opened and new traffic lights were switched on, was followed by frustration with queues forming once pupils went back to school after the summer break.
Responsive traffic lights
Since then, work has been taking place to install new street lights at the junction and commission and monitor an intelligent traffic light system, which responds to changes in the number of vehicles approaching the junction from each direction.
The final piece of work requires the eastbound exit slip road on the A55 to be closed overnight for two nights to resurface a short section of road and paint new lane markings.
Project Manager at Highways England Mark Mosley: “Posthouse roundabout is one of the busiest junctions in the North West and the extra lane and new traffic lights have helped to improve the flow of traffic through the junction since the roadworks were removed in June.
“We’ve been carrying out work behind the scenes over the past few months to make sure the junction is operating correctly and to make finishing touches to scheme, including installing new street lights.
End is nigh
“We now need two final overnight closures of the eastbound exit slip road to complete the scheme, and are carrying out the work when the junction is at its quietest.”
The A55/A483 project also involved installing new traffic lights at the A483 junction with Rough Hill, just south of Posthouse roundabout, and at the junction linking the A483 to the B5445 Wrexham Road, replacing the mini roundabout. These traffic lights have been synchronised with the new lights at Posthouse roundabout to improve the flow of traffic.
CCTV cameras have also been installed at the roundabout to allow traffic officers to monitor the junction and respond quickly to incidents, and a new footbridge takes pedestrians over the A55, close to the junction.
