Tatton Park has been blasted for selling 'sexist' hats which bear the slogan 'future footballers wife'.

The 'disgusting' pink hats have now been removed from sale at the Cheshire tourist attraction's gift shop, following a barrage of online criticism.

Laura Goss was visiting the historical site when she noticed the hats and tweeted her disapproval, the Manchester Evening News reports.

And plenty of others agreed, with one visitor even threatening to cancel her National Trust membership unless the hat was taken off sale.

@naomidaviesart tweeted: "I want to hear that this triggers a nationwide audit, please @nationaltrust, or I'm cancelling sub."

@boristhebold wrote: "National Trust ... wake up. Tacky and sexist. Not to mention the lack of apostrophe! Shame on you."

While others called it an 'appalling lack of judgement'.

The National Trust responded swiftly to Laura's complaint and pointed out that the shop was managed by Cheshire East Council.

It tweeted: "Tatton Park is entirely managed by Cheshire East Council and this product isn’t on sale at the places we look after.

"We’ve shared this feedback with Cheshire East Council and they have removed this product from sale immediately. "

A spokesman for Cheshire East Council confirmed that Tatton Park’s Gift Shop is not a National Trust run or supplied shop, but is run on lease by Cheshire East Council who fully finance and manage Tatton.

The spokesman said: “Tatton management were made aware of the hats on Tuesday and removed them immediately from the shelves as we would obviously not want to upset or cause offence to anyone.

“Our gift shop receives a bulk supply from our supplier, which includes a number of children’s hats.

"Unfortunately we don’t know how this has exactly happened but we have put the hats out on the shelf as part of that bulk supply without thinking whether they were appropriate for the shop and our visitors.

"It was a genuine mistake. We obviously take any complaint very seriously and dealt with it immediately and apologised to the person raising the complaint.”
