AGE Concern Cheshire says some elderly people in Ellesmere Port & Neston might be unaware they could be entitled to extra cash.
The advice comes after the Budget announcement that over-70s are to get an extra £100 a year on top of their annual winter fuel payment.
Age Concern services director Gill Clough points out that while the £100 will make a difference, there is already a financial lifeline for many in the form of pension credits.
But statistics suggest there is a poor uptake of the credits among pensioners.
She said: 'The Government believes there may be somewhere in the region of one million pensioners who are not taking advantage of the credits.
'There will be elderly people in Ellesmere Port and Neston to which this applies and I would ask them to contact the Citizens Advice Bureau or Age Concern if they think they may be entitled.'
Pension credit guarantees that everyone aged 60 and over receives an income of at least £102.10 a week if they are single, or £155.80 a week if they have a partner.
And people may be entitled to more than this depending on their circumstances.
The person who applies for pension credit must be at least 60, and it does not matter if their partner is under 60.
For the first time, people aged 65 and over who have made modest arrangements for their retirement may also be rewarded.
To find out if you might be entitled to pension credit, add up your weekly net income after deductions and add your total savings.
Income includes pensions, certain benefits such as carer's allowance or bereavement benefits, and earnings from a job.
Types of income that are not counted include attendance allowance, disability living allowance, housing benefit and council tax benefit. To apply for pension credit, ring the Pension Service on Freephone 0800 99 1234. The line is open from 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm on Saturday.
If you have speech or hearing difficulties, the textphone number is 0800 169 0133.
When you phone have your National Insurance number ready as well as information about any money you have coming in and information about any savings and investments if you have any.
