A book revealing the fascinating background of a historic Chester apartment has been published by the man who lives there.

John Evans, who has lived at the apartment on Boughton Lodge, Chester for the last 15 years, first discovered details about its history when it appeared in Chester Civic Trust’s millennium book 2000 Years of Building - Chester’s Architectural Legacy.

The book reveals the original building could date back to the Elizabethan era - between the late 14th century and early 15th century.

Inspired by what he saw, John, who has lived in Chester since 1970, carried out further research and discovered the intriguing history of its former occupants - one of whom had tenuous links to Robin Hood and Winston Churchill.

As a result of his findings, John has since written a book called The History of Boughton Lodge and the Surrounding Area which is now available to buy.

He said: “I moved into an apartment in Boughton Lodge some years ago and soon became curious about its history.

“During my research I discovered that the original building may well date from the Elizabethan era and that amongst its many notable occupants, there have been two with a story to tell.

“The Reverend Philip Oliver preached here in the 18th century to congregations that eventually numbered up to 1,000.

“Edmund Sneyd-Kynnersley, who had strands of Royal blood, also has a fascinating family history which included tenuous connections with Robin Hood and Winston Churchill.

"It's fantastic living here - it's a smashing building - not even a lottery win would dislodge me from where I am.

“Additionally, I decided that the history of the Boughton area itself was worth incorporating, as there is much that is fascinating and unique about it.”
