A recycling centre in Northwich has been named the top facility of its kind in Britain in what is regarded as the Oscars of the recycling and waste management sector.

Northwich Household Waste Recycling Centre was chosen as the Civic Amenity Site of the Year in the Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management 2014.

Judges praised the wide range of recyclables accepted at the Marbury Lane site and the increased volume of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) it receives.

They also noted that improved signage and significant engagement from site staff were helping to boost recycling rates, which are forecast to hit 78% this summer.

Executive member for localities Cllr Lynn Riley said: “The Household Waste Recycling Centre is a great asset for Northwich, with a modern design, plenty of room for circulating and parking and some outstanding recycling and reuse facilities.

“We are delighted that it has been chosen as a model of excellence for sites across Britain to aspire to.

“This well-deserved award is testament to the hard work of the council and its partners, and particular praise should go to the site staff whose helpful and professional approach is a major factor in its high customer satisfaction levels.

“At a time when there is so much happening in and around the town – including the very exciting BID – this is yet another opportunity to put Northwich on the national map.”

The facility, which is operated by HW Martin Waste Ltd, has recently undergone a major refurbishment and improvement scheme.

Since April 2013 more than 77% of waste received has been recycled or reused – and every month the site has equalled or bettered its performance.

Adam Smith, regional manager of HW Martin, said: “It recognises the tremendous motivation and commitment of the staff to provide the community with first class customer service, to recycle as much material as possible and to provide the local charity with as many reusable electrical appliances as possible.

“We would like to thank all our customers for their enthusiasm and help which has allowed us to achieve this honour.”

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s partner Valpak Ltd funded the recent improvements under its WEEE contract, providing more skips, additional recycling options and improved customer access to the skips.

Staff provide a local charity with electrical items that can be reused for the benefit of families in need.
