A Maserati driving company director who already had 27 penalty points on his driving licence has been banned from driving for a year.

John Donald, 59, of Vale Royal Drive in Whitegate, Northwich, was charged with driving a Maserati Quattroporte at 100 mph.

Brian Robinson, prosecuting, said Donald was caught driving at 100mph in a 70mph area of the A55 in North Wales in June.

The charge against him was proved in his absence on a previous occasion and he was asked to attend for sentence, Flintshire magistrates’ court at Mold was told.

But when he did not turn up, magistrates proceeded to sentence and he was banned from driving for a year, fined £440 with £80 costs and a £44 surcharge.

The 12 month ban was imposed under the totting up procedure after an additional six penalty points were placed on his licence, taking the number of points to 33.

Drivers normally face disqualification when they reach 12 points unless they can show a ban would cause exceptional hardship.
