ROYAL Mail bosses will not say if more post offices in Halton will close.

Reports appeared over the weekend that more post offices could be axed nationally.

Widnes is already feeling the effects after the Ditton branch and the Albert Road post office on Peelhouse Lane were closed last year, leaving the area with a dozen branches.

Last week, Royal Mail told Government ministers half of Britain's 14,500 post offices should be shut.

But reports suggest the Government is likely to propose that a fifth be closed.

Controversy over plans for reforming the network has been growing in the run-up to an announcement by the Department for Trade and Industry, expected today.

A Post Office spokesman said: 'The future size of the network depends entirely on the Government's decision on the future level of funding it's prepared to provide.'
